Tim Scannell

Tim Scannell is the founder and chief analyst with Shoreline Research, a Massachusetts based consulting, research and information services company specializing in mobile and wireless technology and initiatives. Some of the companies he has worked with in this capacity include IBM Corp., Filemaker, Inc., PumaTech, XcelleNet, Inc.and Verizon Information Technology. Recent clients include Extended Systems, Inc., Bluesocket, Inc., Newbury Networks, Inc., Symbol Technologies, Inc., Network Engines, and TCOM International.

Prior to this, Scannell was a senior analyst with Mobile Insights, Inc., a wireless consulting and conference company based in California that provided proprietary research to a number of companies, including IBM, Toshiba, Palm Computing, and 3Com. Scannell has nearly 25 years experience as a writer and editor in the computer industry, working on such publications as Computerworld, PC Products, Mini-Micro Systems, Systems Integration and most recently Computer Reseller News. He has freelanced for a number of U.S. publications, including: U.S. News & World Report, USA Today, The Boston Herald and Crain's Net Marketing. He was a freelance columnist for The Boston Globe, creating and writing one of the first high-technology columns for that newspaper.

Prior to becoming an analyst, Scannell was a member of the core start-up team of Softbank Corp.'s U.S. division, assisting with the launch and contributing to the Japanese editions of PC Week Japan, LAN Times Japan, MacUser Japan, and PC Magazine Japan. Later, he also established a U.S. bureau for Softbank's Japan-based magazines, and authored a book on the U.S. Computer industry, published in Japan by Softbank. While at Softbank, Scannell assisted with the launch of several business ventures, including one of the first systems to distribute business and consumer software via the Internet. His research also played a key role in building the company's portfolio of some 600 corporations as part of its Internet services push.

Upon leaving Softbank, Scannell continued providing research to the firm's Softbank Hotbank venture capital division. In addition to operating Shoreline Research, Scannell is the co-founder of The Futurist Cinema, a mobile content creation and production company based in the United Kingdom; and is the co-founder of BigDigit, a mobile video and mobile animation content aggregation and distribution company that was launched in 2004 and is the parent company of mFlix, an independent mobile media channel on the Sprint PCS wireless network in the U.S..

Scannell is a frequent speaker at major industry events and serves on a number of technical and end-user advisory boards worldwide. For example, he is presently a consulting advisor to IDG Expos and chairman of its Wireless Sensing Solutions conference. He is also a member of GlobalScot and a member of the Gerson Lehrman Group advisory board. Shoreline partner organizations include Q-Marketing, Inc., The Farpoint Group, and SoRiQ, Inc. (Japan).
