Nick Shelness

Nick Shelness has been an independent consultant and technology management advisor since 2001, working on major engagements for such companies as Cassini Software Ltd., Avaya Corp., Scalix, Inc., Entigo Corp., Microsoft, NextPage, Unilever and United Messaging, Inc.

Prior to this he was a Consulting Engineer for the Communications Products Division at Lotus Development Corp. (1994-1996) and then Chief Architect for that division (1996-1998), where he was a major force in driving changes that were delivered in Notes/Domino R5. He then assumed the rank of Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Lotus, where he led the company’s technical community within IBM (which acquired Lotus Development), managed the company’s relationship with IBM Research, and helped develop and steer Lotus’ technical strategy.

Nick also held a variety of Software Engineering and Product Management roles at Soft-Switch Inc., where he re-architected and re-implemented technology for the translation of word processor documents between different proprietary formats; was the Architect of Soft-Switch's EMX, later the Lotus Messaging Switch (LMS); was a senior member of the Asynchronous Protocol Standard (APS) Alliance authoring team; and the Chief Scientist, with responsibility for technical strategy.

He was also a research assistant at the Edinburgh Regional Computing Center,
University of Edinburgh, and a lecturer at that university’s Department of Computer Science. University of Edinburgh. He also spent some time in the IT department at the British National Oil Corp.

Shelness is a well-known and prolific writer and expert on a variety of topics, ranging from Web-based services to enterprise messaging and disaster planning.
