Glasgow School of Art secures a new 3D vision with 2in10

Sept. 2009 -  The Digital Design Studio (DDS) of the Glasgow School of Art (GSA) recently enlisted specialist advisory firm 2in10 Ltd to complete a Market Validation Exercise to assist in taking its 3D visualization and animation exciting technology to market

The Digital Design Studio (DDS) of the Glasgow School of Art (GSA)is a teaching and research organisation in the field of 3D visualisation, animation and human/computer interaction. Recently it has developed a process-based capability which accurately models cities using laser scanning technology and 3D modelling skills.

This technology has been extended to the capture and modelling of historic sites for Historic Scotland, and the potential for ‘as built’ scanning of complex structures such as the interior of ships, and oil and gas installations.

To prepare for commercialising this technology, DDS commissioned Glasgow-based specialist advisory firm 2in10 Ltd to complete a Market Validation Exercise. The main focus of the project was to take identified market sectors and to assess where the limited commercial resources could be most effectively utilised.

The project itself encompassed desk research, existing customer and prospective customer surveys and extensive field research in attending and speaking to the attendees of various conferences and events in order to gain a broad and fully rounded view of the opportunity in front of DDS. It was carried out by a team from 2in10 and from 2in10’s US-based partners Milestone Strategies.

“2in10 were given a challenging assignment, but carried out a thorough and professional job. I’m very happy with their report, and we will move forward to implement their recommendations," Seona Reid, Director of the Glasgow School of Art commented.

In addition to understanding the current market state and trends, 2in10 also carried out extensive work on predicting the future for the specific technology to be commercialised by DDS, the markets that were most applicable and the competitive pressures which existed in each of them. This work produced results which were vitally important to the future focus of the activity to be carried out.

The recommendations provided in the report included which specific vertical markets should be targeted, what type of technology partnerships should be sought to gain market penetration more quickly and what type of business model should be employed to make the most of the opportunities being presented to DDS.

“With regard to the outcomes and recommendations provided by 2in10’s report, we now have strategic clarity on the future direction of our Digital Design Studio and its world-class 3D visualisation capability,”Seona Reid continued.

“The project was both challenging and rewarding. We concluded that there are multiple opportunities facing DDS because of the quality of its delivery, and produced clear recommendations on where to focus," said 2in10 CEO David Farquhar, who led the project. "We look forward to continuing our relationship with the Glasgow School of Art and to assisting further with the overall commercialisation initiative”.
