February 2006 – Edinburgh, UK - SeeByte Ltd., a technology company that specialises in remote sensing and situational awareness software for the offshore, military and transportation sectors has announced the opening of its new headquarters in Edinburgh.
The offices were officially opened by Crawford Beveridge, Executive Vice President of Sun Microsystems. SeeByte’s staff and honoured guests attended the event from the United States Navy and British Petroleum.
Since it’s founding in 2001 as a spinout from Heriot Watt University, SeeByte has experienced rapid growth providing solutions for the offshore and defence industries. The company’s SeeTrack system was first demonstrated in numerous trials, including AUV Fest 2001 and the MX series of NATO trials, and was successfully deployed by the US Navy Special Clearance Team One and the Royal New Zealand Navy.
The move to Orchard Brae House in the heart of Edinburgh is part of the company’s expansion plan that will ensure SeeByte maintains product leadership, service excellence and the highest quality of customer support delivering “Awareness Made Easy”.
SeeByte and Sun were brought together by venture management firm 2in10 Ltd. in a ground-breaking company development programme, designed to totally re-align the company’s approach from an engineering focus to a market focus. 2in10 retrained and redesigned the company to give it this market orientation, then sent some of its key executives to the US on placements at Sun facilities where their learning was reinforced. The company will now only build products based on well proven and documented market needs.
“By learning from the 2in10 programme, SeeByte’s strategy has been radically changed to one listening closely to market demands and focus carefully on the key capabilities our customers actually need, while maintaining international leadership in the underlying technologies we create and deploy,” says founding CEO David Lane. “As a result, we now have over $3m of additional sales prospects in our pipeline. The SeeTrack software platform is emerging as an industry leader in the underwater marketplace, turning sensor data into actionable information for people and machines.”
“Since its inception the company has been self-financed through software licensing and development programmes carried out for Naval customers in the US, Europe, New Zealand as well as customers in the offshore market in Aberdeen and Houston, including BP, Subsea 7 and ConocoPhillips,” adds Stuart Genet, SeeByte’s Financial Director. “We expect the growth curve we are experiencing to continue as we further penetrate the underwater market and expand our capabilities to address customers’ needs in related market spaces.”
